HEPA Filters Help Trap and Disable Bioaerosols

What the Study Accomplished

During the study, researchers from the University of Colorado at Boulder and Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri installed a special, hybrid air filter on the roof of an indoor pool. The pool in question was chosen because it had been the site of an outbreak in which nine lifeguards fell ill due to an infection present in the air. The hybrid air filter that was installed consisted of a high quality HEPA air filter and a special UV air filter; the HEPA air filter worked to remove even ultra-fine particulates from the air, and anything that managed to escape the HEPA filter was zapped by UV light in that filter.

The combination of a high powered HEPA air purifier and innovative UV air filters proved to be very potent indeed. At the beginning of a one year period, about twelve percent of bioaerosols were removed from the air at the indoor pool. By the following year, a remarkable 76 percent of them were taken out of circulation. The hybrid filter – like many HEPA air purifiers – used a blower that forced incoming air through the respective filters. High levels of particulates were removed from the air, leaving it purer and more healthy – and drastically reducing the risk of spreading infectious disease.

Implications of the Study

The study using the hybrid air filter is interesting because it targets one of the most common areas for the spread of infectious particles: public pools. There are many other areas people frequent where the risk for contracting a disease is markedly higher; in addition to pools, hot tubs and hospital pools are other places where trouble can occur. Homeless shelters, correctional facilities and public transportation systems are also notorious breeding grounds for infection. This study shows that all of these places – and many more – can benefit from HEPA technology.
