While people have long been familiar with the benefits of air purification – it has been shown to alleviate many respiratory symptoms and aid in things like asthma relief – compelling new evidence shows that it may actually help extend people’s lives, too. A recent study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health – in conjunction with researchers at Brigham Young University – indicates that cities that have made concerted efforts to curb air pollution and reduce airborne contaminants have helped their residents add as many as ten extra months to their lives. This exciting news serves to highlight the importance of clean air and why everyone should strive for it.

The Consequences of Air Pollution

The negative effects of air pollution are the most pronounced in major cities like those examined in the Harvard study, but are present virtually everywhere. People who are exposed to air pollutants and other contaminants face higher risks of heart attack, for example. Most certainly, people who are already at risk for this condition will only see it exacerbated by breathing polluted air on a regular basis. By cleaning and purifying the air that they breathe, these people can dramatically reduce that risk – and extend their life expectancy.

Air pollution is also known to worsen the effects of asthma and other chronic respiratory ailments. The lungs and passageways of the body simply are not designed to contend with filthy, contaminated air on a regular basis; their functioning is very negatively impacted, and people see an increase in unpleasant symptoms. But it’s what isn’t readily apparent that is the most disturbing: the shortened life spans of those who have to breathe dirty air on a daily basis. The Harvard study truly reinforces what many have known for years – that clean air is a true public health issue and should be a top priority for all.

The Study

Researchers involved in the study looked at fifty-one different U.S. cities, including New York, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles and Chicago. They collected air quality data between the years 1979 and 1983, then between the years 1999 and 2000. In the years between data collections, these cities had implemented various clean air acts that reduced air pollution – especially fine particles that measured approximately 2.5 micrometers. The results were quite stunning, to say the least.

The study showed that on average, people in the more recent set were now living 2.7 years longer than those from the original set of data. About fifteen percent of that increase was definitively attributed to improvements in air quality – a very sizable and important chunk. If anyone had any doubts about the importance of air quality on one’s health, this study should have erased them completely. More than anything, this study showed that air filters are far from a passing craze, but a very real and important way for people to improve their quality – and quantity – of life.

Achieving Cleaner Air

Rather than just crossing your fingers and hoping that your city will begin implementing dramatic air quality improvements, you can – and should – look into cleaning the air in your home yourself. If you live in or near one of the impacted cities, air pollution can seep into your home easily. Since it’s invisible, there is no way to realize you and your family are being exposed to it. Air purifiers are excellent ways to improve indoor air quality, thereby enhancing your overall well being.

Although there are many different products available today for improving air quality in the home, none come as highly recommended – or with as many proven benefits – as HEPA air purifiers. These products use state of the art technology to pull even incredibly small, fine particulates from the air, keeping them out of circulation – and out of the lungs and sensitive air passageways of people in the home. Those looking for allergy or sinus relief will likely notice improvements quite quickly; even people without any chronic problems should notice that they generally just feel better. When breathing is easy, living is easy.
