8 Simple Steps to Managing Your Pet Allergy

Cats And Dogs Picture-Clean Air PlusMost people believe that a pet allergy means no pets allowed. And this is an especially big issue concerning children because the pets are likely already in the home and the onset of the allergy can be sudden. However, contrary to this popular assumption, a pet allergy is quite manageable even with multiple pets in the home. In fact, there are at least ten million pet owners worldwide, many of them children, who are allergic to their own pet.

Typically, pet allergies are the result of a particular protein that exists in pet dander and saliva. This tiny protein is notorious for its stubbornness and durability. It adheres to clothing, upholstered furniture and even bedding, and this explains why those with allergies can have an attack just by brushing up against a pet owner or even furniture where the pet has laid. In order to combat this pet dander, it takes diligence and the following simple strategies.

  1. Keep Pets Out Of The Bedroom And At Least One Other Area.

Bedding, such as bedspreads, blankets, comforters and pillows, are a terrible trap for dander, and even if you wash everything weekly, it still won’t be enough to keep it dander free. By keeping the pets out of the bedroom, you remove that burden, and you give yourself a place where you can enjoy an extended period of dander-free breathing. Keep another area of the house pet-free so that you have a convenient place to catch your breath.

  1. Use An Air Purifier Fitted With A HEPA Air Filter.

No matter how diligent you are, pet dander will contaminate your air. The best solution to this problem is air filtration, particularly HEPA air filtration. HEPA traps particles of sizes 0.3 microns and bigger. To put that into context, that is 1/300th the size of a dog or cat hair. So by running a stand-alone HEPA air purifier that is the appropriate size for a room, you can eradicate airborne dander, and some people with allergies find that their symptoms disappear completely.

  1. Use A Vacuum With A HEPA Filter.

A traditional vacuum tends to collect less than 50-percent of what it picks up. Most vacuums are not perfectly sealed and the remainder simply blows back out into the room through those gaps. Since carpeting is a primary collection center for dander, it’s important to use a HEPA vacuum cleaner that will trap all of the dander in the bag and keep it there.

  1. Give Your Pets A Weekly Bath.

To control your pet’s dander bathe it weekly and brush it daily. Perform all bathing and brushing outdoors as much as possible. For some animals, such as dogs, frequent bathing can have a negative effect on the quality of their coat and even their immune system. Speak with your vet who can provide techniques and shampoos that you can use more frequently. If you can’t bathe every week, then at least brush and then wipe the coat down with a damp cloth.

  1. Wash Your Hands Frequently.

Always wash your hands before touching your eyes, nose or mouth. After playing with the pet, wash your hands, even if your allergy is minor. Otherwise, take a shower and change your clothing.

  1. Do Not Keep Rodents As Pets.

Rodents, such as gerbils, hamsters and mice, produce allergens that are much more potent than the typical dog or cat dander. This potent dander can produce violent reactions even in people whose allergic reactions are normally quite mild. If you must keep one, avoid that room and always have somebody else perform the cage maintenance.

  1. Avoid Carpeting As Much As Possible.

Like bedding, carpeting is a trap for dander, and it can make life unbearable for the person with pet allergies. The perfect solution is to remove all carpeting, replace with hard surfaces such as wood or tile and use washable throw rugs where a covering is necessary. In areas where you can’t remove the carpeting, vacuum frequently.

  1. Wash Pet Bedding Frequently.

Just as your own bedding is a trap for dander, so is the pet bed. It collects the dander, and then each time the pet jostles it, it emits a fine dander cloud into the area. And you don’t have to be nearby when this happens for it to affect you. So by cleaning the bedding regularly, you can at least minimize this problem. If your allergy is particularly severe, you may prefer an outdoor enclosure for your pet. This can reduce pet allergy symptoms considerably.
