Allergy Proofing Your Home

No Allergies Sign-Clean Air Plus

Allergy season is a difficult time of year for many people, and a big reason why it can be so challenging is that many seasonal allergy sufferers take a last-minute approach to allergy proofing. The ideal way to combat allergens is through a committed year-round cleaning regimen. You can have a very real effect on your year-round comfort even during those months when you’re not directly experiencing discomfort. Of course, we all have to start somewhere, and it’s never too late to take those first steps toward a consistent approach.

Here are some of the steps you can take right now to help provide your family with an allergen-free home environment:

  • HEPA Filtration- The most important step you can take in allergy management is to use an air purifier with a HEPA filter. HEPA filtration has a dramatic and immediate effect by removing 99.97% of all airborne particles that are larger than 0.3 microns in size, including pet dander, pollen, dust mite allergens and mold spores.

  • Housecleaning- The next most important step is a commitment to house cleaning. With proper filtration and regular cleaning, your air will be fresher and easier to breathe. Stop using those store-bought air fresheners, and don’t use chemical-based cleaners for regular use. When you do have to use them, always provide proper ventilation.

  • Flooring- Long-term, you’ll want to consider as much bare-wood flooring as possible, especially if you have severely allergic people in the home. Carpets and rugs are a haven for dander, dust mites, mold and a host of other contaminants. Vacuum your carpets at least once per week with a HEPA filtered vacuum cleaner and wash all rugs regularly as well.

  • Curtains and Shades- Curtains and shades are toxic dust magnets, and if they attract dust, then they attract pollen, dander and all those other contaminants. While performing your weekly cleaning, pay particular attention to them. And if you’re severely allergic, then you may want to consider all shutters and blinds, which are easier to keep clean.

  • Clutter- Avoid clutter because clutter provides more surface area for dust and other contaminants and therefore makes it more difficult to keep clean. Organize regularly and try to avoid large arrangements of knickknacks and other such items. Keep all surfaces clean with an organic multi-surface cleaner.

  • Houseplants  Earlier we mentioned not to use store-bought air fresheners. For many, this is a difficult habit to break because they have relied on them for so long. But if you follow these steps, then you will no longer need them. If you want to freshen the air, then you can do so naturally with houseplants. Choose your plants carefully, and don’t overwater them.

  • Living Rooms- Living rooms can be tricky to keep clean because there is so much activity taking place in them. Cushy seating is a particularly problematic source of contaminants. If possible, use leather seating, which you can simply wipe down. Otherwise, vacuum cushions and wash slipcovers regularly.
  • Bedrooms Our mattresses build up dust mites and dead skin cells over time. We try not to think about it because it’s so disgusting, but we can take steps to manage it. For instance, wash all bedding in hot water once per week. The water must be approximately 130 degrees to kill dust mites. Another option is a mattress wrap for allergy prevention.

  • Shoes Shoes are a leading culprit when it comes to bringing pollutants into our home. Dust, pollen and even pesticides can adhere to the bottom of our shoes. Then, when we enter the home, we track all of those contaminants. Prevention is as simple as using a high-quality abrasive doormat, which we should replace every three months to avoid mildew buildup, or better yet, exchanging our outdoor shoes for indoor shoes when we enter our home.

All of the listed steps help but the bottom line is that HEPA filtration provides the greatest and the most immediate impact out of all of them. Within days, your family will breathe and sleep easier. Your home will finally smell fresh. And having a pet may be a real option for the very first time. Don’t let your kids suffer any longer. Don’t let them breathe that filthy air ever again. Let the family-oriented experts here at Clean Air Plus help you choose the HEPA air purifier that will change your family’s life forever.
