HEPA Filters Help Trap and Disable Bioaerosols
Although most people are probably unfamiliar with bioaerosols, many people have likely been exposed to them many times in their lives. Bioaerosols are airborne biological particulate matter that can create a slew of unpleasant and undesirable symptoms in people who are exposed to them. Scientists are continually looking for ways to clean these types of bacteria from the air. Researchers examining the effects of a HEPA filter and UV technology showed that it was quite effective at removing some bioaerosols. This demonstrates the power of HEPA air filtration, and its potential to prevent the spread of many diseases.
What the Study Accomplished
Researchers from the University of Colorado at Boulder and Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri installed a special HEPA air filter on the roof of an indoor pool. The pool in question was chosen because it had been the site of an outbreak in which nine lifeguards fell ill due to an infection present in the air. The hybrid air filter that was installed consisted of a high quality HEPA filter and a special UV filter. The HEPA filter worked to remove ultra-fine airborne particulates, and anything that managed to escape the HEPA filtration stage was zapped by UV light in that filter.
The combination of a high efficiency HEPA filter and innovative UV filter proved to be very potent indeed. At the beginning of a one year period, about twelve percent of bioaerosols were removed from the air at the indoor pool. By the following year, a remarkable 76 percent of them were taken out of circulation. The hybrid filter – like many HEPA air purifiers – used a blower that forced incoming air through the respective filters. High levels of particulates were removed from the air, leaving it purer and healthier – and drastically reducing the risk of spreading infectious disease.
Implications of the Study
The study using the hybrid air filter is interesting because it targets one of the most common areas for the spread of infectious particles: public pools. There are many other areas people frequent where the risk for contracting a disease is markedly higher including hot tubs and public transportation systems which are notorious breeding grounds for infection. This study showed that all public environments and our homes can benefit from HEPA filter technology. For people who remain hesitant about the power of HEPA technology, this information should help ease their doubts. Considering that HEPA technology has proven effective in the trying conditions imposed by a public pool, there should be little doubt about its effectiveness in the home.
Enjoy the Benefits of HEPA Technology at Home
If you think that infectious particles and other pollutants are reserved for public pools and other common areas – think again. The fact is that indoor air quality can be quite poor even in the cleanest of homes. Every day, you may be inadvertently exposing yourself and your family to potentially serious pollutants. Why run that risk? By installing a high quality HEPA air purifier, you can rest assured that over 99.97% of all airborne particulates as small as 0.3 microns, including all dust, animal dander, dust mites and mold spores are being pulled from the air that you breathe, making for healthy, breathable air. In addition to HEPA, an air purifier that contains high-capacity activated carbon helps eliminate volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) such as gaseous chemicals, vapors and odors. The combination of a HEPA filter + activated carbon not only ensures optimal air quality, it also reduces the triggers for allergies and asthma.
