Their immune system is still developing, and rapid growth is an additional strain on it. Due to this, children are particularly susceptible to environmental pollutants, and that makes them more likely to develop allergies and other conditions. If you or your child's mattress is treated with flame retardants, consider replacing it with a mattress consisting of natural materials, such as organic cotton or wool.

  3. Always use natural bug repellents rather than resort to commercial pesticides. Pesticides include harsh chemicals that can harm children, including causing genetic changes and blocking the absorption of nutrients. Some research has even linked pesticides to childhood leukemia and various birth defects. Keep in mind that natural alternatives to pesticides are not necessarily safe to ingest, especially for children.

  4. Avoid using air fresheners. Strive for actual clean air that smells great on its own. Commercial air fresheners include formaldehyde and hormone-disrupting phthalates, and contribute to air pollution indoors. Dust regularly and use a HEPA air purifier to create an environment that is naturally clean and great smelling.

  5. Use natural alternatives to commercial, chemical-based cleaners. Most commercial cleaners have components that can cause respiratory issues.
